Journey Joyfully by Experiencing Wuhan Like a Local

Traveling to Wuhan? Get ready to have a week of fun days with culture, food, and nature. To maximize fun in your trip, here is a convenient guidebook that leads you through how to make staying in this Hubei provincial capital as comfortable an experience as possible — stress-free, all good memories.

When and How to Go

Wuhan is a tourist destination year-round, but October to mid-June is best for you to visit with comfortable weather and celebration anywhere outdoors with flowering trees. If you’re a fan of cherry blossoms, it’s best to visit from mid-March to early April when it’s a pale pink ocean with soft blossoms out at East Lake.

Traveling around town is easy in a pleasant way. Wuhan boasts a good public transportation network with a good bus service, a spanking-new subway, and abundant taxis. Special Tourist Bus lines (starting with number 4, i.e., 401 or 402) are still tourists’ favorites — the buses pleasantly connect you to names such as Yellow Crane Tower, East Lake, Hubei Provincial Museum, and so on. The tourist buses run a route every ten minutes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., so getting around for browsing is a breeze. In the case of short trip or late-night return trip, taxis and ride-hailing services such as Didi are convenient to get and a good option.

Must-See Sights: Make Every Day Count

1. Yellow Crane Tower

The classic Yellow Crane Tower cannot be left out on any visit. Built on the banks of Yangtze River, the century-old building, provides a jaw-dropping experience of the city skyline and the mighty river below. Stare in amazement at its distinct silhouette, stroll around its beautiful gardens that surround it, and snap a photograph or more — the blue sky background gold eaves is absolute perfection.

2. Hubei Provincial Museum

History buffs, buckle up for the outing: The Hubei Provincial Museum is a plunge into the life of ancient China. Take in 2,400-year-old Zenghouyi bronze bells that continued to ring out in theatrical productions and see stunning works of art like the Sword of Goujian. Add in traditional music demonstrations for an interactive cultural experience.

3. Hubu Alley and Liangdao Street

Hubu Alley is a popular street food alley with urban street foods and street treats famous for its color and taste. Early risers will anticipate a locals’ breakfast scene in Liangdao Street where they can break bread with locals for “doupi†(tofu skin) before advancing to more food stalls for the day. The food streets themselves are awakened to present a glimpse of locals’ culture by their most beloved food.

4. Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge

Walk across this monumental bridge at night — China’s first across Yangtze River. When it vanishes from light, reflected city lights provide a spectacularly romantic scene.

5. Han Street and Wanda Plaza

Spend your evening after sightseeing having some shopping at Han Street or Wanda Plaza. They incorporate local boutiques and overseas brands along with lots of places to have a drink and chill with friends or watch the people.

Savoring Wuhan: Eat Like a Local

Wuhan cuisine is renowned — tasting it is a requirement for any perfect trip. Don’t leave without a taste of:

1. Hot Dry Noodles (Re Gan Mian): Wuhan’s famous breakfast — springy noodles tossed with salted sesame sauce.

2. Doupi (Tofu Skin): Vegetables or rice and meat wrapped in soybean skin — very popular at Liangdao Street morning markets.

3. Wuchang Fish: Steamed with ginger, garlic, and soy in order to have the light, delicate taste.

4. Duck Neck: Hot and crispy, it was a popular beer snack being from crowded food streets.

5. Soup Dumplings: Delicious broth-filled bites normally eaten with a touch of vinegar for that sour kick.

6. Lotus Root Soup: Light, nourishing soup popular in winter, reflecting Hubei’s special love for lotus root.

Don’t hesitate to chat with stall vendors or locals — food is a point of pride and you’ll find most are excited to share their favorites.
