Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace) Entry

A place where tears might fall from even the toughest, Yuanmingyuan (the Old Summer Palace) is a monument within Beijing deeply steeped in Chinese history. In fact, by the 18th and 19th centuries, these connected gardens-Yuanming Garden, Changchun Garden and Yichun Garden-became widely renowned as the “Garden of Gardens,” an Imperial retreat built during the Qing dynasty. When the Anglo-French allied forces burned and pillaged these magnificent gardens in 1860, Yuanmingyuan was reduced to its ruins today. The complex, an architectural and landscape testament to imperial might and to history lessons, continues to be beloved of scholars and students, of parents with young children, photographers, artists and those simply seeking beauty from any corner of Beijing, at any time of the year.

What Guests Are Saying

Yuanmingyuan Park keeps getting strong praise, and most visitors mention a rare mix of deep history and calm nature. The Western Ruins Scenic Area is usually the highlight, and people talk again and again about the Dashuifa Grand Fountain plus the detailed stone archways.

Fuhai Lake gets love in every season, but summer is where lotus flowers steal the show. If you like history, you might especially enjoy the Panoramic Model Exhibition, it shows the palace original layout with impressive precision. A small group of reviewers recommend downloading a map ahead of time, because the grounds are spread out, and it’s easy to slip past key spots

FAQ

1. Is same-day entry possible without a reservation?

Yes, walk-in tickets are sold at the gate, but booking early is still strongly suggested during busy weeks or national holidays, visitor caps can fill fast.

2. Which entrance is the easiest?

The South Gate is usually the most convenient (close to Peking University, and also the subway). If you plan to explore more from east to west, the East Gate may feel better.

3. Are guided tours available inside the park?

Audio guide devices can be rented on-site. You can also use QR codes at major attractions for a self-guided phone tour.

4. Can I take photos?

Outdoor photography is generally fine, no big restrictions. Flash is limited in some indoor exhibition rooms, and if you do commercial filming you need prior written approval.

5. Is the park comfortable for elderly visitors and children?

Most of the terrain is flat and kept in decent shape, so it works for many ages. There are shaded benches and rest points across the park as well.
