Discover Chenzhou, China’s Hidden Paradise of Lakes and Mountains
Think what it is to get out of the rut into a misty lake, a criminal cliff, and still village world. As one of the most secretive places in Hunan Province, Chenzhou is the place you would be glad to be told the secret of you are about to see, as every turn of the road opens up to a new beauty. Wander with me round some of its most memorable foyers.
1. Dongjiang Lake – The Jewel of Serene Waters
On the very edge of the center of Chenzhou there is Dongjiang Lake, a huge emerald enclosed in rolling waves of hills and islands covered with the forest. The mornings of this place are enchanted to magic — the surface of the water appears to be covered with a silvery mist and then the sun slowly fills the sky. Take a small boat, drift across the mirror-surfaced lake, and watch the mountains roll out in the mirror.
2. Gaoyiling Ridge – Strolling Through a Red-Rock Fantasy
Gaoyiling is a sea of burnt-orange cliffs and green valleys with known dramatic Danxia landforms. The formations are trekked with trails and openings of these views are made over the layered peaks shimmering with gold in the evening. It’s the geologist’s dream and a photographer’s dream wrapped up in one.
3. Yangtian Lake Grassland – The Southern “Steppe” of China
Looking down from Beihu District, Yangtian Lake is the sole location of its kind in southern China — a grassland with no fence encircled by crater-like ridges. Under sunbaked summer days, the green hills are filled with wildflowers and horseback riders weave across the hills. During mist, it seems to come from a fairytale.
4. Mangshan National Forest Park – Into the Clouds of an Ancient Forest
Deep within Yizhang County lies Mangshan, China’s oldest and most biological forest. The air is laden with perfume of pine and moss, waterfalls murmur their voices over their little gullies covered by fogs. Climb ascend the Wuzhifeng peak to view the entire mountain or walk along the paved cloudy, which has sunlight break through the trees.
5. Feitianshan Geopark – Earth’s Story in Stone
Feitianshan’s landscape is like reading a textbook on geology. Red sandstone strata, hidden caves beneath the ground, and bizarre formations tell tales taking a million years in the making. The park is easily explored on foot, and a new wonder made by nature and time is just around the corner.
6. Suxian Ridge – Where City and Nature Meet
Only a few minutes from downtown, Suxian Ridge graciously looms over the Chenzhou horizon. Its temple-tipped summit, peaceful forest trails, and glass-bottom skywalk make the ultimate quick escape. Hike at sunset and watch city lights sparkle below as temple bells peal out across hills.
7. Wanhua Rock – The Secret Under the Hills
Wanhua Rock lies hidden under the surface of the earth and it is a maze of tunnels with stalactites gleaming in the soft light. The cave covers over two kilometers and leads to chambers that are almost cathedral-like – a silent reminder of the patient handiwork of nature.
8. Ancient Villages – Time Travel in Stone and Timber
Intermixed with the ancient villages in Chenzhou are Wayaoping, Miaoxia, and Banliang. They have their grey tiles, crisscrossing stone alleys, and weathered courtyards which express the past style of life. Walk slowly, speak with villagers brewing tea at the doorways, and view time stretch and unwind around you.
9. Beihu Lake and Yuhou Street – Chenzhou by Night
In the city once more, Beihu Lake shines in bridge light and lanterns. It is peaceful by day but comes alive at night when Yuhou Street beside it is alive with music, aromas of hot street food, and laughter. The clash between modernity and ancient charm is a wonderful evening stroll.
10. Jiulongjiang Forest Park and Wugai Mountain – Wild Escapes
For solitaries, Jiulongjiang National Forest Park and Wugai Mountain in Rucheng County offer pristine wilderness. Mist drapes over dense forests, streams shear through rock face covered with moss, and paths remain blissfully untrodden. Here, you relearn what silence sounds like.
Chenzhou is not such a place that it so shouts, it speaks, and calls you over to hear. It is an alternative between its opaque lakes, scarlet cliffs and ancient villages and an experience that is grounding and surreal, at the same time. Pay it a visit, and you will see why so many tourists refer to it as the most beautiful secret of China.
