China has rapidly become a society in which cell phone payments dominate nearly all commerce. Can You Use It Without a Chinese Bank Account?
Yes — recent updates allow linking foreign credit or debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and some more) to both Alipay and WeChat Pay. This change makes mobile payments possible for even short-term travelers.
Some catchpoints to watch out for:
1. Such complete functions like peer transfers, “red packet” distributions (hongbao), or bank-to-bank transfers may still not be done with foreign cards.
2. There can be a limit of transactions or daily when paying with a foreign card.
3. Passport or other identification is required for verification during installation.
Alipay also has a special function, “Tour Pass,” to facilitate foreign visitors who do not have Chinese bank accounts.
One more good sign: American Express cards have just been added to Alipay’s list of accepted cards, so even more travelers on different card networks can link and pay directly.
How to Set Them Up Before or During Your Trip
1. Download and install the apps. Alipay and WeChat can be downloaded from your smartphone’s app store (use the international version if available).
2. Set up your account. Enter your phone number and fill in necessary personal details.
3. Add a payment card. In each app, find the “Bank Card” or “Add Card” option and enter your card information. Proceed with verification instructions.
4. Verify identity. You’ll need to upload your passport or other identification as part of the process.
5. Test a small payment. Try paying for something low cost (a snack or drink) to confirm the setup works.
6. Switch to corresponding language mode/navigate mini-programs. In WeChat, set language to English where needed, and learn how to launch mini-programs.
Everyday Payment Situations
Once installed, the apps are extremely simple to operate. In cafes or stores, there is usually a printed QR code on the counter. Open the app, scan the code, enter the amount, and pay. You can also present your own personal QR code and have the cashier scan it.
In outdoor shops, the apps are ride-hailing, ordering food, and even visiting museums in the guise of mini-built-in apps. Public transit in all but a few cities also hooks into mobile wallets so you can tap your way through subway turnstiles with your phone.
Mobile payments dominate, but having some cash buffer for the odd occasion where coverage is patchy, especially in rural towns, is still a good plan.
