Fuzhou, nestled on the southeast coast of China, is the place where mountain air collides with sea air and ancient beauty clashes with the heartbeat of the modern days. When you decide to visit, prepare to encounter a city that switches on you at every corner— quiet temples, green parks and glimpses at the riverside. Now, we are going to explore a dozen of the spots that Fuzhou captures in the actual sense.

1. Three Lanes and Seven Alleys

You cannot claim that you have been to Fuzhou without strolling through this hodgepodge of old streets. This well intact area was the home of scholars and officials back in time, now filled with boutique cafes, museums and art galleries that hides behind Ming- and Qing-dynasties houses. It is the place where humming Fuzhou lingers under their feet.

2. Drum Mountain and Yongquan Temple

With a quick ride out of downtown, cool forest trails and views of the Min River can be found at Drum Mountain (Gushan). At midway up, there is Yongquan Temple — one of the most sacred of the Buddhist temples in Fujian — its red walls surrounded by misty pines and the soft ringing of temple bells floating through the air.

3. Fuzhou National Forest Park

This expansive forest park is a quick reprieve when the noise of the city is overwhelming. It is the dream of a nature lover due to towering bamboo grove, shaded bridges and banyan tree that is as old as 1,000 years. The residents visit here in the morning to practice tai chi and in the evening to walk around here, you will soon find out why.

4. West Lake Park

Come into this Chinese classical garden in the heart of the city and the lotus ponds, stone bridges and walkways lined with willows all will make you feel like slacking down. You may row over the lake in an teeny boat or have tea in a pavilion that sits along the lake as the city buzzes through the woods.

5. Fujian Museum

The cultural treasure of the province is located next to West Lake. Fujian Museum is a blend of the art, ceramics and folk of the region with centuries old backgrounds. Every gallery provides a portal into the rich maritime history of the province and how it serves as a cultural crossroads along the coast of China.

6. Min River Night Cruise

When the twilight comes Min River becomes a strip of light. Take a night ride and see Fuzhou skyline ignite. The water glows around the temples and bridges and it is a serene almost filmlike experience that makes one look at the city in a different perspective.

7. Minyue Water Town

Minyue Water Town is a place that makes you think you are in a living painting because it is constructed in a way that it displays the ancient culture of the river built in the region. Stone bridges spans canals, that are surrounded by lantern-lit walkways, and as you are passed by local crafts and steaming bowls of fish balls and rice noodles — all as genuine as the scenery.

8. Pingtan Island

The wind, waves, and open skies play the major role in the coastal escape of Fuzhou, Pingtan Island. Its scenic area of “68 Nautical Miles†is a stretch towards the horizon with golden beaches and rugged sea cliffs. The turquoise water appears to be nearly unreal on sunny days.

9. Xichan Temple

Xichan Temple is an oasis of tranquility and religion concealed in the city. It is one of the oldest temples in Fuzhou, established more than a millennium ago and has ancient banyan trees. Incense flows into the courtyards and guests take time to think or just relax with the calmness.

10. Fuzhou Confucian Temple

It is a beautiful temple renovated in honor of Confucius and generations of scholars who used to influence the education in the area. Its silent courtyards, red pillars, and inscribed tablets provide an idea of the extent to which Fuzhou is concerned about wisdom, learning, and respect of tradition.

11. Xinhai Revolution Memorial Hall

The museum is situated in the previous residence of revolutionary Lin Juemin and it highlights a critical period of Chinese history. The touching tale of bravery and revolution was narrated through personal letters, photographs, and other objects, a reminder that Fuzhou has always been the city of intellectuals and revolutionists.

12. Qingyun Mountain Scenic Area

It might be time to set one day aside in nature, so take a trip to Qingyun Mountain, approximately an hour south of the city. Waterfalls roll down green slopes, clouds stick to granite mountains, and picturesque foot roads offer the wild beauty of Fujian. It is an ideal combination of peace, challenge, and reward.

Fuzhou is not a city that you hurry over, but rather a city that you touch. There is a rhythm and stronger sense of this quiet-fascinating city between its green gardens and temple courts, and river breezes, and every halt as well brings a variation of the beat. Load your curiosity — Fuzhou is willing to impress you.
